Sugar Cosmetics is on a launching spree and how! After matte lip crayons, lipsticks and eyeliners, it’s back with another ‘Genius’. Yes, Stroke Of Genius Heavy-Duty Kohl 01 Back To Black is the newest kajal on the block after previously introduced Twist and Shout Fadeproof Kajal. So, read on for my review and swatches of Stroke Of Genius Heavy-Duty Kohl 01 Back To Black.
Price:
Rs 499 for 1.2 grams.
Available with:
Sugar’s official website, Nykaa, Flipkart, fabbag etc.
Ingredients:
Iron Oxides, Black 2, Mica, Ferric Ferrocynaide, Dimethicone, Synthetic Wax, Silica, Stearyl Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Trimethylsiloxysilicate/Dimethiconol, Crosspolymer, Octadecene, Dimethicone/Vinyle Dimethicone, Crosspolymer, Isoceteth 10, Pentaerythrityl Tetra Di-T-Butyl Hydroxythydrocinnamate.
Packaging:
Signature abstract art on the outer paperboard carton marks the quintessential Sugar packaging. The kajal comes in a sleek black wand that has to be sharpened after a few uses. A sharpener is complementary with the product. I, however, am partial towards kajals that come smartly packed in a twisting wand like Lakme Iconic or even Sugar’s Twist and Shout Fadeproof Kohl. Not just it reduces the risk of breaking the tip while sharpening but also controls wastage. Sharpening is just too painfully old school and requires one to necessarily carry a sharpener at all times.
What It Claims?
This high performance waterproof kohl provides maximum color in a single stroke and lasts for up to 8 hours. The wax based creamy texture makes application easy and helps in creating various eye makeup looks.
My Experience With It.
First thing first, as much as i love making bold eye makeup statements, my oily lids and the stickiness around the eyes makes it difficult to let the kajal stay in place for long. I, thus, prefer liquid liners for trying various styles as they dry up quickly and ensure better sustainability and a crisp finish.
The Stroke Of Genius is wax based kohl that spreads evenly leaving a velvet like finish behind. It doesn’t clump like other kajals and one firm stroke is enough for a jet black and rich application. My oily lids proposed their own share of problems and refused to cooperate with the waxy formula. The kajal began smudging after a few hours given to the oiliness of my eyelids. I am sure, it will work better for those with not-so-oily skin. Though, it is totally waterproof and survived water splashes along with my mild facewash. Great for a day out in the pool!
Also, the kohl is very soft and requires gentle handling. Even sight pressure applied during strokes can make the tip completely break off, breaking your heart as well. I used to refrigerate it to firm it up before the application.
Being highly pigmented, intense and statement looks can be created in a matter of moments. Also, given to the heavy pigmentation, just a little product is used everytime. This makes up for the price that is on the steeper side at Rs 499.
I wish the tip was a bit thinner and more pointed to help create finer edges, wings and flicks.
HITS
- Highly pigmented, just a little product is required to create even the bold & statement looks.
- Rich velvety finish
- Jet black colour.
- Free of paraben, mineral oil
- Wax based formula allows smooth and even application.

MISSES
- Very soft core. Even slight pressure can break off the tip.
- Old school packaging. Needs to be sharpened frequently, which is messy and leads to product wastage.
- A heavy duty wax-based formula makes the product oily. Not suitable for people with oily-lids.
- Little on the expensive side.
- A thick tip doesn’t allow fine wings and flicks.
